Star Wars Toys - The Millenium Falcon

My favorite Star Wars Toys item has got to be the Star Wars Millenium Falcon. This was a broken down cargo ship piloted by the heroic scoundrel Han Solo and his fuzzy partner Chewbacca. The current remake is one of the neatest things I have seen in quite some time.

The new Hasbro Star Wars Toys Millenium Falcon features tons of lights and sounds. Many of the sounds are taken directly from the Star Wars movie; which brings a very cool element to the design and structure of the toy. The original movie sounds pop when the ship starts up, jumps into hyperspace and goes into a cruise.

This is a must have for any Star Wars Toys collector, although the price is a bit steep for my blood and I can tell you that the parts are a bit on the cheap side. I may still splurge, we shall see.

I think that this Star Wars Toys item should come with Han Solo and Chewbacca for the price that it is going for, but it does not.

Now, I’m going to have to get a bit critical here on the Millenium Falcon. It is not one of the best made Star Wars Toys that you are going to come across. It is fairly cheap made, too much so for the steep price. The action figures do not fit into the ship that well. They should fit naturally.

All in all, if you can find a deal on one of these, I would snag it. Otherwise, maybe we should wait until Hasbro revamps this Star Wars Toys legend.

I agree with the reviewer above, in that the Millenium Falcon is my favourite Star Wars Toys item. A close second would be the AT-AT Walker, but that will be another post…

Thus far, I already own 2 Star Wars Millenium Falcons from previous generations. Both versions were manufactured by Hasbro, NOT Kenner, but there are subtle variations as they were released in different eras. For example, my earliest vehicle did NOT have any engine lights, but the landing gears were retractable. My second vehicle had rear engine lights and sound effects. But the third incarnation, i.e. the recently released Clone Wars edition (Item #: 87591 on the Hasbro website), is arguably the best rendition so far.

Not only does it come loaded with MORE LIGHTS AND SOUND EFFECTS, it also features improved playing areas. One of my major gripes with the older vehicles was that when the top cover comes off, it doesn’t fit well. This current version comes with TWO top covers that come off and they fit snuggly (three if you count the one hiding the battery compartment).

The lights are now present in the rear engine (to simulate hyperdrive), the cockpit, when the landing ramp is lowered, and the front pinions. The sound effects also match well, as the movie dialogue from the pivoting training probe cum lightsaber scene in Epidode IV comes on when you manipulate the actual training probe in the vehicle.

It also includes firing missiles (seven in total) for those who like to actually shoot at your action figures. And there are accompanying sound effects to boot!

Another new feature (but this may not be Star Wars canon) is the mini-shuttle which docks neatly inside the falcon. The shuttle also comes with its own firing missile and emits cool docking and undocking sounds.

I found one peculiarity though. The top main turret gun moves in sync with the pivoting gunner station, but the bottom main turret does not. Due to the way the new gun turret is built, it no longer allows a 360 degree rotation and the firing arc is somewhat limited to less than 180 degrees.

The landing gears are also non-retractable so it seems wierd to be “flying” with the landing gears down.

My vehicle did come with both Han Solo and Chewbaca, so I do not know why the previous reviewer’s one did not.

All in all, the new Millenium Falcon vehicle (Clone Wars Edition) is a most satisfying new toy which will clearly impress any Star Wars fan. Just turn off the lights, fire up the hyperdrive and watch their enraptured faces!
